Golden Curry - May 2006

Summary

The final reckoning is shown in the reviews table. Overall we rate it a very commendable 20.0 Taj Mahals.

We last visited the famed Golden Curry a few years ago when we rated it an overall 16.0 Taj Mahals. Our memories of last time were one of a fun evening, but indifferent food with a very long waiting time.

We meet up in the George Pub 5 mins up the Buckingham Rd and were somewhat surprised to see the whole place had been through a recent refurb. Quite cafe society now rather than a dark and smokey pub as it was the last time.

First impressions were very good as we entered the restaurant. This was of course the first time we had visited since the refurbishment of the restaurant. Certainly very smart and a lot more up market than before. Nice and spacious with comfy seating and more than one of us noticed the very nice large tables.

Now onto the food. Very much better than our recent visits and this is reflected in the much better score this time. Highlights were the excellent poppodoms, dips and mains were generally well thought of. A couple of members were not impressed with the plain nans though.

I think it a little shame that on a couple of occasions the service was a little slow because this was noticed from a few of the members. Not particularly busy for a Friday night but that's no bad thing in my book.

So here's the rub. Two curry houses right next door to each other, which one do you go to? Well prior to this visit there would be have been no need to even consider the options; you would have gone to the Rose. But now things are not so clear cut. The Golden Curry is more spacious, plusher and is very good value. True I still think you probably get a better meal at the Rose BUT you do now have to make a decision.

Well done the Golden Curry!
