Golden Curry Review - Apr 2010

wp0e66a503.jpg

Our third visit to The Golden Curry, Bletchley, took place on 30th April with only 5 members attending due to others making the most of a long weekend and getting away. We met in the Park pub, a very convenient 20 yards away from the curry house. It would seem that the Park has recently changed owners as it has been re-decorated and changed around since our last visit. This was welcomed and the staff and other customers friendly enough and the beer supped a bit too easily!!

The Golden Curry was quite busy when we got there (always a good sign !) and we were made very welcome. It has been extended and re-decorated since our previous visit and it looks a treat; better layout, larger and comfy seats and tables and decent low level lighting all complimenting an 'authentic ' atmosphere. The music was not too loud but not always 'Indian' and the staff very attentive without being overbearing.

The next shock was the menu, it offers an amazing amount of dishes, 9 vegetarian starters as an example! We had the obligatory  'dips and crisps ' as we waded through the menu and very nice they were too, fresh poppies and good chunky dips, washed down with very nice, cold, lager.

I have always considered The Golden as home of the Rashmi kebab (my first ever Indian starter many moons ago) and I was not let down this time as it was huge and really very good (two wrapped 'burgers' and side salad ). The wait for the main courses was not over-long, just enough time for the starters to sink down a bit and again these proved to be an eye opener, large portions, table heaters and fresh vegetables used throughout being some of the memorable points but the tastes and tenderness can't really be put into words. We were, in fact quite speechless after the first few tastes and asked each other, seriously, is there anything wrong with this? How do we down grade it?

Steve's veggie dishes were very well done, crisp fresh vegetables (not the mushy pap you often find!) and lots of them, we all 'helped' him through it!

Whilst the huge leap in quality over previous visits was suprising, the biggest shock was to come with the bill. Sam had already predicted 'quite cheap' but even he was amazed......STUPIDLY cheap ! (and not discounted for the club visit!)

We even met the owner, Ali, who had travelled up from South Bucks to see us! He hasn't changed a bit in nearly 30 years that I've known him, proof that  curry's good for you!?!

The Golden Curry got a very high score from this visit and if you are looking for a good old curry in comfort and on a budget, I would recommend you give The Golden a try, I doubt you will be disappointed!
