La Hind - March 2009

Summary

I was particularly looking forward to this months curry visit to La Hind as it was one of the first curry houses I went to after joining the MK Curry Club 4 years ago. We started of at Wetherspoons on Midsummer Boulevard for a couple of pre meal beers and then a five minute walk to the restaurant. La Hind Indian is situated next to Milton Keynes station, (handy for taxis).

It was fairly busy which is generally a good sign but we had pre-booked our table as there were 14 of us. The restaurant has a good atmosphere with polite and friendly staff.. The large fountain in the middle of the room can be a bit of a distraction with the sound of running water as I’m sure it increases the visits to the “Little Boys Room”.

The menus are very clear and offer a good selection of  dishes including a number  that I hadn’t heard of before. Popadoms & dips arrived quickly followed by our drinks (Kingfisher on draught). The waiter only managed to get 11 out of 13 starters (until it was pointed out to him) and we did have a bit of a wait for them. The meat samosas I had were very good and think overall most of the starters were good.

We arrived at La Hind at 8:30 and we didn’t get our main courses until after 10:00! In fact one of them wasn’t till 15 minutes after that. The service was very, very slow. My main course however was very  good when it did eventually arrive, one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Roast Lamb Lazziz is not one I’ve come across before but very tasty.

Overall the food was very good but the service was very poor. Prices were above average (but I wouldn’t have minded if we had good food and good service). I would love to have the main dish again but I certainly won’t be rushing back to La Hind due to very slow service.

Common Curry - Only 5p short of it being in the expensive bracket.

Other Comments

Positive:

  • Adraki Chaamp starter tender and tasty, the most tender lamb you could get
  • The menu is clearly marked to indicate the spicyness of the dish
  • The Dhaba Gosth main course had a kick but was luke warm
  • Chicken Shashlik, very tasty
  • Lamb Dhansak nice but only luke warm
  • Chapati and Sagg Aloo both good
  • Good keema rice
  • Murgh Harahai, chicken, mild and tender, very good quality
  • Nearly all the food that arrived was generally of a very good quality

Negative:

  • Very slow service
  • Ambience too bright, fountain too loud and irritating and decor old and tired
  • Not all meals arrived at the same time
  • Prawn Butterfly starter out of the freezer - looked more like a slab of plaice
  • King prawn puree, tough and sweet
  • Stuffed Paratha, wasn't stuffed, must have been the wrong order
  • The toilets were untidy, paper bin overflowing, the hand blower wasn't working, there was no water from the hot taps and gaffer tape was sticking the floor down
  • No listed main vegatarian dishes, unusual and disappointing
  • Only four pickles with the poppadoms
