Passage to India - June 2008
Summary
A curry house in Stony, which you either seem to love or hate, whose decor has a
theme, this now seems to be the norm but you couldn’t say that this theme wasn’t
original. Tables placed in rows inside carriages with one or two items stuck on the
side to make it more realistic, not sure that this worked however. A very large picture
on the wall of a front of a train, the type of which has never been seen before,
apparently running through scenery that wasn’t near India so presumably this wasn’t
the ‘passage’ into it. The high ceiling and rather formal nature of it all didn’t
add to the ambience.
Once past the ‘waiting room feel’ of the restaurant the service was fast, possibly
the best we’ve seen, certainly this year. The food was good quality but although
the more spicy dishes, like the Methi Madras, lived up to expectation, the Bhuna
and Jalfrezi were definitely too mild. Perhaps they are trying to offer a greater
selection for the milder tastebuds.
The menu, although comprehensive, didn’t indicate any ingredients. You can keep asking
the waiter but this is annoying, especially if the menu contains several unusual
or house special dishes, which this one does.
