Silk Road - Mar 2010

Summary

OK, so you know the drill by now – it’s Friday night and the MKCC are looking forward to this month’s meet.  We started in Weatherspoons with the usual assortment of Beers, Ciders, Cokes etc.  Weatherspoons delivered their standard reliable service and we were off to a grand start.  On to the Silk Road!  A ‘fusion’ restaurant or ‘mash up’ (see I am down with the kids) of different food styles but without any mash involved.

We were well received and seated in quick time, drinks orders taken and the popadoms & pickles order noted.  Unfortunately, the ‘fusion’ nature of this restaurant showed its head quickly when our ‘popadoms’ arrived broken and hidden amongst a bowl of prawn crackers – ??!!  And no lime pickle to boot, though this was provided upon request.

Again, having to pick out the Indian starters, curries, sides etc from the menu proved difficult as the dish names had also got the ‘fusion’ treatment and were interspersed with Chinese dishes.   Oh well, Murgh Lashooni Tikka, and a Rajasthani Laal Maas sounded good so I took a chance (although Maas sounds a bit like mash – it wasn’t).

My starter had great flavour and the texture and tendernous of the chicken was really very good.  Likewise the main course was very tasty and one of the best main dishes I have had in a long time.  I also thought the mushroom bahji was note worthy with nice firm fresh mushrooms and not too oily.

The down side to the evening was the poor service; 30 mins before the starter order was taken, the main course took nearly an hour after finishing the starter, empty plates were cleared slowly and in some cases not at all, one of the members had to ask 3 times for a glass for his cobra.  Our main waiter seemed efficient but his team weren’t quite so ‘on the ball’.  The music was generally thought to be too loud by most members.  I did mention our misgivings to the head waiter who was very apologetic.

This place should be a good venue for when trying to cater for a mixed group of tastes –the office party and the like.   Not one for me personally and judging by the mediocre scoring by the other CC boys not theirs either but if you get the correct service it could be a very good evening.

Judge Methi

Common Curry - Generally good food, but on the expensive side.

Summary - A good place for office workers and business parties but not for a traditional, value for money curry.

No certificate has been awarded, they were seriously let down by their poor service.
